Chapter 1:The Fun They Had
The story THE FUN THEY HAD centers on an eleven-year-old girl’s experience of her education. Throughout the text, different pedagogical approaches surface: centuries ago, for example, children learned together in schoolhouses staffed by human teachers. In contrast, Margie’s education is solitary. Her mother decides the schedule, but the lessons are given by a mechanical teacher—a robot whose screen flashes with lessons, with a slot for entering homework and tests. Margie and the robot undertake her education every weekday, alone except for each other in a room in Margie’s home.

- Ans: Tommy found a book in their attic. This book was of Tommy’s grandfather when he was a little kid. Margie found it strange that the words printed on a book stood still instead of moving the way they did on a computer screen. She also found it odd that the words on a page always remained the same as the first time they were read. Besides, the idea that someone would write a book about schools was itself strange for Margie.
- Ans: Margie has her virtual school in her house only. Her school was positioned close to her bedroom. It was basically her study, not school. She had no classmates as we see in the present-day schools. The main reason for not having any classmate is that the class was personalized for her. Moreover, she did not have any physical teacher as she had a virtual teacher.
- Ans: Margie and Tommy have virtual teacher. It is computer fitted with latest gizmos. The computer is programmed to give lessons depending on a child’s age group and previous learning history. The content are highly interactive and children learn from the mechanical teacher. The child needs to submit test papers regularly to the computer and he gets instant feedback in the form of the test result.
The Road Not Taken is an ambiguous poem that allows the reader to think about choices in life, whether to go with the mainstream or go it alone. If life is a journey, this poem highlights those times in life when a decision has to be made. Which way to go?
The ambiguity springs from the question of free will versus determinism, whether the speaker in the poem consciously decides to take the road that is off the beaten track or only does so because he doesn’t fancy the road with the bend in it. External factors therefore make up his mind for him.
